Sujata Aher × Aarti Ghanekar

This exhibit is a creative dialogue between two friends. The inspiration flowed both ways – some paintings grew out of words, and some poems were written in response to paintings. As close friends, this became a true exchange – of ideas, perspective, and voice shaped as much by their friendship as by art. What emerged is a conversation between image and language – each pushing the other further and exploring how art transforms when seen through another’s lens.

Agency

Helios, bound for distant horizons, walked slowly, wishing to grant Gaia a few moments more of slumber before he bid her adieu. Armed with vows of fidelity and swift return, he approached her, confident in his power to ease her distress at the darkening skies. Gaia stepped into his light, adorned in her finest red, gold, amber, glamorous, radiant, unmistakably whole. In that instant, as his gaze came to rest upon her, he understood: though sustained by him, she would not come undone by his shifting tilt. She stood— confident, rooted in her own endurance, as he walked away with hesitant step.

The Space Between

A dirt road, a wooden bridge, some old tunes, a promise of stolen moments — make life beautiful. The road may turn to mud, and the bridge wash away, the song may go silent, and promise be forgotten. Still, the afterglow of longing, the naïve defiant hope make life worth living.

A Quiet Exchange

On the edge of a pond, a willow leans, its branches reaching— seeking solace of friendship. The pond, its waters still, holds the willow in gentle grace. No counsel given. No judgment passed. Only comfort offered. Their quiet exchange creates no ripples, yet reshapes them both— the willow floats lighter, on the pond's water turned just a little salty.

Supermoon

The moon rose, quickening Earth's pulse— close enough to hear the whisper of her tides, yet too far to sink into her depths. So, they remain in endless orbit: drawn close, not together, pulled apart, not free— intimacy without release. Tonight, as he is drawn to perigee by the cruel mercy of her gravity, only the night bears witness to their ache.

Some believe the river hurries because she longs for the sea. Every path, every bend, every mile she travels is flattened to one purpose— to be one with his tide. But look beyond the folklore, let her layered depth reveal itself. Uninhibited, her song can echo for miles— or fall to a whisper so soft you must lean close to see it flicker in your eyes— playful Urvashi, inviting the world to dance. At ease, in court and wilderness alike, claimed by many belonging to none— sovereign Draupadi, hostage to no throne. Unstoppable, she flows yet tempers her current where fragile roots reach for water along her banks— nurturing Parvati, cradling the living earth. Fearless, she leaps from cliffs, carving valleys through mountains— ferocious Durga, remaking the world. Perhaps that is why her surrender becomes the story, her journey forgotten. Stories get redacted when her agency transcends him. Ask Sita.

Patient Waters

Unmarked on maps, unremarked by passing eyes, untroubled by tidings, the pond rests— held within its banks. Fish glide, frogs leap, ducks paddle, birds stalk its patient waters, nurturing and nurtured. Seasons lean close and spill their colors, then lean away, leaving shadows. Rain ripples, wind tickles, sun warms, moonlight shimmers, stars settle in its quiet mirror. The pond, unmarked on maps, unremarked by passing eyes, undisturbed by dreams of making waves, rests— complete and boundless.

Undone

The river and bank journey together, edges touching, shaping the other, mindful that abandoning thresholds would destroy the delicate balance leaving behind something broken, neither time nor tenderness could mend. He stands rooted, she flows bending herself around his firmness, hoping that somewhere along the way a part of him might come loose, drawn not by force, but by time, and lose itself in her waters.

Beyond Footfalls

On a spur of a trail, beyond footfalls, a wooden bench rests beneath a magnolia's gaze. Around, the world clamors for witness— for love to be proclaimed, for intimacy to be displayed. Here, nothing asks to be seen. Only to let be, to let love breathe.

Slipping Through My Fingers

She will soon grow into a river, learn to bank her flow. But today, she is unbidden, free. She lacks depth, but she is not shallow — She is just beginning her journey for uncharted waters. Her canvas, yet unpainted soaks up all that she sees: yellow of sun, blue of sky, brown of earth, green of forest, black of night, silver of moon. I cup my palms and scoop her up, hoping to save a little of her rainbow. But when I gaze into my hands, all I see slipping through my fingers is me when I was just a stream.

Herself

A rain-soaked winter landscape beautifully naked, like a woman fresh from a bath. Water pearls glisten in tousled hair, bare skin unadorned. Old laughter, tucked in soft creases, stories of battles written in fading scars, visible, unguarded. And for a little while, she is simply herself— free to exist, unburdened. In these fleeting moments, we catch a glimpse of her quiet elegance. Yet, the world awaits spring to cover her weathered body in robes of “uncomplicated” beauty until the chimera matters more than what endures.
